Luke Butler

Luke Butler

A figurative painter with an uncanny and cinematic sense of time and place.

Luke Butler’s painting practice is informed by a lifelong fascination with pop imagery, particularly the historical tropes of Hollywood film and television. Drawing from photographs of the natural world, the urban landscape, and portraiture, Butler’s pictures suspend and infuse moments, so they feel like the denouement or aftermath of a climactic scene. Incorporating text, Butler plays with the tension between a still frame and storytelling, imbuing everything with narrative potential.

Butler(b. 1971, San Francisco, CA) has an MFA from California College of the Arts and a BFA from The Cooper Union. His work is in the permanent collections of the de Young Museum, San Francisco; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Berkeley Art Museum; Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA; Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, AK; Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; and Norton Museum of Art, Miami. His work has been included in group exhibitions at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive; The FLAG Art Foundation, NY; Mills College, Oakland, CA; Orange County Museum of Art, CA; Crystal Bridges Museum; and ICA Boston, MA, among others. He enjoyed a solo show at Charlie James, Los Angeles in November 2024. Butler lives and works in San Francisco. He is represented by Jessica Silverman, San Francisco.
