Jessica Silverman is pleased to announce participation in The Armory Show’s 2023 edition, running from September 8 to 10 at the Javits Center in New York. The gallery will present artists Sadie Barnette, Julie Buffalohead, Judy Chicago, Theresa Chromati, Matthew Angelo Harrison, David Huffman, Hayal Pozanti, Clare Rojas, Rose B. Simpson, Rupy C. Tut, Catherine Wagner, Pae White, Chelsea Ryoko Wong and Margo Wolowiec in The Echoing Eye, a specially-curated booth that investigates memory, reminiscence and commemoration. The gallery will also participate in the fair’s Platform section curated by Eva Respini, with monumental tapestries by Pae White as well as Woody De Othello’s latest large-scale and freestanding bronze sculpture, thought in mind (2023).
A glowing lightbox sets ablaze Judy Chicago’s new hand-painted stained glass. Revisiting her radial abstractions from the 1970s, the hard-edge lines and psychedelic colors of Flowering Glass capture both vibrancy and transparency—eliciting a sense of being able to see through something to its core.
Clare Rojas’s magic realist figuration and precise abstraction explore the curious and precarious beauty of the California coast and its sentient wildlife. In two new paintings, she uses spray paint to elicit hazy memories of a late-night walk and birds on the water at dawn—imagined spaces for humans and animals to flourish.
In Hayal Pozanti’s large scale oil painting Sudden Sea of Joy, the bodily sensations—smell, touch, taste—of an ecstatic memory are conjured through color and movement. Biomorphic forms that resemble a shell, flowers, and the sea evoke Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus.
Masterful paintings by Julie Buffalohead capture the spirit of a Ponca tribe woman named Mae Hinman who was a student interned at the Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in the early 20th century. Seen through a screen of crimson swathes of paint, in Hunger, a young tribal woman offers a rat to foxes as a trade for an apple from their bounty.
