Summer Mixtape

Summer Mixtape

Online Exhibition

Jessica Silverman is pleased to present “Summer Mixtape,” a timely cross-section of painting, sculpture, photography, textile, and ceramic by gallery artists. Like our favorite playlists, shared affinities of color and mood create a rhythm of their own, revealing unexpected resonances among distinct practices. Vibrant, ambitious, and unmistakably of the moment, “Summer Mixtape” celebrates the pleasure of discovering the works that define the season.

"In Japanese folklore, foxes exist between worlds. They are intelligent, shape-shifting beings that can guide, protect, or deceive us, carrying both mystery and wisdom. In this sculpture, which is currently on view at the Anderson Ranch in Aspen, Colorado, I wanted the fox to feel like a quiet guardian, standing atop a globe that represents the universe."

Dashiell Manley, Elegy for whatever (untitled elegy)
“This was one of the first elegy paintings I made. These paintings started as games I would play in the studio to get myself out of a certain headspace. Vessels to dump into. While the systems of composition were less flushed out in these early examples, they contain the ‘moments’ of discovery that go on to form the foundation of the elegy series. There are moves, marks and passages of these early works that are impossible for me to duplicate.”

Mozambique refers to lost connections to ancestral lands of Africa. Here the Traumanauts find themselves reconnecting spiritually in a terrain of new hopes and possibilities.”

Blue Cabbage is part of a longstanding and ongoing fascination with cabbage from my time gardening with my father. I admire the cabbage’s resilience. They are always the last ones standing as the seasons change. I’ve seen some unharvested cabbages last through winter, barely shriveling up, serving as shelter for insects and other small creatures trying to survive. They are dramatic in form, rich in color, and represent abundance.”

"Working with glass has opened a new way for me to imagine a bell—not only as a sculpture that carries sound, but as one that holds and transmits light. In the form of a bell, the material brings a different kind of resonance, where light becomes as integral to the work as sound."

“Inspired by Northern California's surroundings, this painting encapsulates a trip to the coast with friends. Exposing what is beneath the surface at low tide, friends congregate around the revealing of a world beneath the surface. While a seagull happily dines on a small crab, a figure discovers an abalone shell. Under a dark-liquidy surface, lays a world of revel and wonder.”

Nesting is about a moment of safety and softness in a space that isn't fixed—the joy of being held without being enclosed. That tension is part of what interests me about the thresholds of domestic space: doors, windows, curtains —the porous edges where intimate, bodily life meets the wider social world.”
