Sadie Barnette, People (resin, oak, aluminum)
Throughout her practice, Barnette explores the intricacies of human belonging through text and form. The new sculptures are stacked iterative blocks of the phrase “good people” made of different colors and materials such as wood, aluminum, marble, or resin. Assembled into large pillars of undulating surfaces and textures, the message is abstracted and not immediately revealed until an overhead view is accessible. Here, the artist makes physical the cultural significance of a deceptively simple phrase in three-dimensional space.

Sadie Barnette, How To Vol 3
Separately, multi-media wall works such as How to, Vol 3 (2024) consider the splendor, and awkwardness, of everyday experiences. Employing meticulous mark-making by hand, the work operates as an instruction manual for self-actualization across 12 panels, using references from Barnette’s personal life, but ultimately provides more questions than answers.

Borrowing its title from Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, the exhibition embraces beauty, not as a superficial pursuit, but as an ancient and universal human endeavor as well as a source of inspiration, restoration, and prophecy.
