FOG Design+Art 2024
January 18-21, 2024
Jessica Silverman presents a solo booth by Claudia Wieser at FOG Design+Art 2024. On view from January 18 to 21, the booth was conceived as a total environment, featuring polished stainless steel mirrors, turned wood sculptures, ceramic tile furniture, a woven tapestry, drawings and wallpaper. Titled “Echoes of Life,” the installation flirts with functionality while being highly formal with a big-picture perspective on art history. In dialogue with the visual rhythms of Sonia Delaunay and the mysticism of Hilma af Klint, Wieser’s work spans debates in architecture, design, and fashion, making the artist a fitting choice for the 11th edition of San Francisco’s premier art fair.
Based in Berlin and trained as a blacksmith before she studied art, Wieser’s proficiency in a range of materials from copper and gold leaf to wood and clay informs the broad-ranging tactility of her work, particularly her coupling of cool and warm, hard and soft materials. In a new tapestry, the artist uses a range of metallic threads and colors to create a complex environment of depths and surfaces.
In a mirrored and tiled wall work, the ethereal, airy, reflective stainless steel of the top half of the work contrasts with the grounded evocation of land and sea below. Meanwhile, in a black, white and turquoise chaise lounge, for example, an ultra-glossy glaze contrasts with the invitation to recline.
On the walls, spellbinding colored pencil drawings on handmade paper evoke the spiritual nature of geometries. Meticulously applied with moon leaf—a silver-toned gold leaf—geometric principles are rendered almost cosmic. In "Echoes of Life," energetic lines and arcs span various materials, metallics, and colors, enveloping the viewer within Wieser’s visionary mise en scène.
