FOG Design+Art 2022
January 19-23, 2022
Jessica Silverman is pleased to announce a group presentation of new works by Judy Chicago, Sam Falls, Clare Rojas and Pae White at FOG Design+Art, taking place from January 19 to January 23, 2022. Works by these four artists were selected for their various approaches to landscapes and states of liminality, or the feeling of being in-between. Through sculpture, ceramics, painting and photography, this presentation engages with spectral or other-worldly forms that are intimate yet accessible, translating personal experiences into meditative gestures that reference the serenity of the natural world.
On view will be Judy Chicago’s Garden Smoke series, which stem from creative impulses the artist experienced during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. For this series, Chicago created and photographed lush, colored smoke sculptures in her home garden in New Mexico. Surrounded by words relating to confinement, the photographs express the beauty of unrestrained creation.
Joy and Sorrow (2021) by Clare Rojas is the artist’s first bronze sculpture, depicting a goddess-like figure who holds a black bird in each hand, symbolizing the balance of living with both joy and sorrow. Her painting Just watching... (2021) evokes a deep calm, showing two lone voyeurs gazing into a majestic landscape. A distant cave almost serves as a kind of portal, while soaring birds seem to indicate being in a constant state of arrival and departure.
Paintings by Sam Falls employ photographic and printmaking processes as the artist arranges foliage and cold-water reactive pigments on canvas to create ghostly silhouettes. Works such as Spring to Fall (2021) channel the ambient transitions between seasons into singular paintings with verdant and diaphanous colors, resulting in an ethereal record of phase-changes and nature.
Shimmering and iridescent glazed ceramic works by Pae White show the generative, vast applications of clay. For these sculptures, the artist uses a process called physical vapor deposition where a pressurized chamber creates a gem-like layer of film on the surface. Lightsail (2021) and Crystal Persuasion (2021) resemble alien textures or an undiscovered language, embracing the versatility of natural materials while creating a hypnotic viewing experience. Both Falls and White will present their first solo exhibitions at Jessica Silverman in 2023.
