    Jessica Silverman is celebrating its tenth year of participation at Art Basel Miami Beach. From December 6 to 10 in booth B1, the gallery will present “Rays of Hope,” a group show exploring ancestral narratives and utopian cosmologies. The exhibition embraces artworks that seek to heal, repair, and overcome in diverse mediums by Judy Chicago, Beverly Fishman, Jocelyn Hobbie, Matthew Angelo Harrison, Julian Hoeber, Loie Hollowell, David Huffman, Isaac Julien, Dashiell Manley, Rebecca Ness, Woody De Othello, Vincent Pocsik, Hayal Pozanti, Davina Semo, Rose B. Simpson, Rupy C. Tut, Pae White, Margo Wolowiec and Chelsea Ryoko Wong.

    Rose B. Simpson’s “Nightwork” is a new series of small clay figures. Their bodies are marked with shards of broken ceramic that document where the artist feels the emotions she processes during nightly rituals. By contrast, Simpson’s large bronze Cairn sculpture rises from the ashes to honor the loving accomplishment of mother and child.
    Rupy C. Tut's handmade pigment painting on canvas and new tapestries depicting forested landscapes allude to the artist’s eco-spiritual sensibilities and subject matter.
    On the heels of Judy Chicago's critically acclaimed New Museum retrospective in New York, the booth features several works including an important 1973 work titled Transformation Painting. The work offers a metanarrative of the artist’s evolution from her Great Lady paintings to The Dinner Party (1979), while Flowering Glass (2023), a painted lightbox, reinterprets the iconic image on the original cover of Chicago’s autobiography Through the Flower.
    In two bas-relief paintings, Blue Nip and Meeting in the Middle (both 2023), Loie Hollowell confronts the viewer with the globality and universality of the human nipple while exploring the sensuality and spirituality of geometric abstraction.
    Beverly Fishman, an artistic pioneer in her exploration of biotechnology, is represented by a new large-scale wall work from her “Polypharmacy” series, wherein the shapes and colors both enliven and soothe the viewer.
    Major paintings by David Huffman include a historic four-panel screen from 2009 titled The Promised Land. Populated by his “traumanauts,” black figures in spacesuits navigate a tropical fantasy landscape. A new painting titled The Sun Still Rises is the artist’s largest social abstraction and unpacks his own history of growing up in Berkeley, California.
    Margo Wolowiec's large round painting made from handwoven fibers depicts a solar eclipse and the protective “eye” markings on moths’ wings. An environmentalist obsessed with powers and defenses of nature, Wolowiec sees eclipses as moments of unification where diverse peoples share an experience of awe.
    Hayal Pozanti’s large-scale painting, Cosmic Jello evokes a sense of joyful movement. Brightly colored biomorphic forms glide across water or fly through the cosmos, resembling otherworldy water lilies or alien spacecrafts.
    Miami-born artist of Haitian descent, Woody De Othello, presents new ceramic sculptures and a painting. An exquisitely glazed vessel shrouded in hands atop a leafy ceramic base questions how lived experiences manifest through mundane objects.
    Pae White's red chandelier, Chapped Heart, hangs at the center of the booth like an architectural cosmos featuring fluid laws of physics. Meanwhile, a new paperclay tapestry titled hoodoo evokes the mystery of a darkened forest at night.
    In a sculpture titled Operimentum (2023) by Matthew Angelo Harrison, the outline of a mask from the Dan people of Liberia is carved into a resin-encased Exxon hard hat. They are kindred spirits—talismans of defense and fortifications that safeguard human tenderness.
