    Art Basel Hong Kong 2024

    Jessica Silverman presented “Ancient Wisdoms” for their debut participation in Art Basel Hong Kong 2024, on view from March 26 to 30 at booth 3C05. This curated exhibition marked the Hong Kong debut of artists Rose B. Simpson, Hayal Pozanti, Julie Buffalohead, Rupy C. Tut, and Chelsea Ryoko Wong. Alongside works by Loie Hollowell, Judy Chicago, Beverly Fishman, Julia Jo, Jocelyn Hobbie, Woody De Othello, and Clare Rojas, the artists explore tradition, memory, knowledge, peace, and love.

    In the gallery's special Kabinett section, the gallery will present a suite of exquisite pastels by Loie Hollowell that portray central spheres radiating waves of luminous energy. Gesturing to Op Art, feminism, and spiritualism, Hollowell's colorful paintings-on-paper suggest the sentience of new life, the birth of the universe, and the power of evolution.
    Rose B. Simpson’s ceramic figures, Jet Pack 1 and Jet Pack 2 (both 2024), carry clay rings on their backs, representing the experience and strength the artist has built over her years of making art.
    Inspired by stories the artist’s father told her about his youth in Hong Kong in the 1940s, Chelsea Ryoko Wong’s Jumbo Floating Restaurant (2024) depicts a mythical place in the artist’s imagination, based on the floating restaurants in Aberdeen Harbour.
    Julie Buffalohead’s work also explores ancestral memory and imagined worlds while paintings by Jocelyn Hobbie, Woody De Othello, Hayal Pozanti, Clare Rojas, and Rupy C. Tut relay the experience of the magic of the natural world by walking, swimming, and floating in it.
    Beverly Fishman’s wall reliefs explore altered states through polychromatic, hard-edge abstractions that aspire to awaken the senses. While Julia Jo’s vibrantly colored, whirling abstractions conjure trancelike states.
    Finally, the booth includes an important historic embroidery by Judy Chicago, titled Creation of the World (1984), depicting ecstatic bodies birthing pomegranate-like new beings. As part of the Art Basel Hong Kong Film Program, Chicago’s 1971-2 video Women and Smoke, California will screen on March 30 at the fair on Level 1, room N101B. The atmospheric work fuses Earth Art and performance art while conjuring the power of ancient goddess rituals.
