Applied Intersections: Claudia Wieser in conversation with Helen Maria Nugent

On the occasion of Claudia Wieser’s solo exhibition “Forum,” please join us for a conversation between the artist and Helen Maria Nugent, Dean of Design at California College of the Arts. The discussion will explore topics such as beauty, geometry, and craft within the context of crisscrossing the borders between the fine and applied arts.

Claudia Wieser (b. 1973, Freilassig, German) did an MA in Painting and Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, after an apprenticeship as a blacksmith and a stint in a film production company. She has exhibited at The Drawing Center in New York, the Kunsthalle Nuremberg and the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart in Germany, the Museo d´Arte Contemporanea in Genoa, Italy and the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis in Missouri. In March 2018, Wieser will be included in Hinge Pictures: Eight Women Artists Occupy the Third Dimension at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. Her work has been acquired by many prominent collections, particularly in Germany, including the Contemporary Art Collection of the Federal Republic of Germany, DekaBank Art Collection, Deutsche Bundesbank Kunstsammlung, Helaba Art Collection, Lenbachhaus, and Sammlung Goetz. She will enjoy a solo exhibition at the Smart Museum, Chicago in September 2019. She is represented by Marianne Boesky and Sies + Höke. The artist lives and works in Berlin. This is her first show with Jessica Silverman Gallery.

Professor Helen Maria Nugent is the Dean of Design at California College of the Arts and a partner in Haelo Design, a research-oriented studio that pursues speculative projects at the intersection of art and design. Before moving to San Francisco Nugent spent twenty years at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she led new educational initiatives and held leadership positions including, Director of the First Year Program, and founding Chair of the Designed Objects department. She has lectured widely on design and education, most recently delivering a keynote for the Canadian Association of Fine Art Deans. In 2013 Nugent was appointed as a master teacher by the National Young Arts Foundation and helped established design as an award category for the US Presidential Scholarships. The work of Haelo Design will be on show at 68projects in Berlin from January to May 2019 and was previously presented at the Istanbul Design Biennial, the Chicago Cultural Center, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, and Devening Projects. She was born in Scotland and earned a BFA with honors in Environmental Art and a Master of Design from the Glasgow School of Art.
