Woody De Othello’s Cool Composition is a giant bronze fan, whose anthropomorphism suggests a spectrum of emotional states. Born and raised in Miami to a family of Haitian descent, De Othello is fascinated by African “Nkisi,” a belief system in which objects are inhabited by spirits. In an age of global warming, a towering fan may provide solace and escape, but this one also breathes and sighs. It is keen to divulge a secret, share its wisdom, perhaps even proselytize or prophesize.
