Shannon Finley has produced a series of acrylic paintings that are in dialogue with the history of abstraction from the Futurists through Gerhard Richter to Sarah Morris. Although they reference the past, they point to the future in the perfection of their compositions and the perplexing, translucent quality of their surfaces. Finley composes his paintings using digital imaging software and applies a paint made from acrylic and clear gel with industrial palette knives. He applies 20-30 layers of paint, creating subtle variations in texture and finish, adding nuance to the already complex compositions.
